The purpose of this project is to enlighten people about pro-wrestling. I’ve been a wrestling fan since I was 13 years old but I only came out of the wrestling closet last year (2014). Wrestling is not a sport but the people who practice it are athletes who sacrifice their bodies on a grand stage for everyone to see whilst also having to perform the lines given to them like actors. This is quite possibly the only profitable performance-art. There is a lot of prejudice against this corner of pop culture and I hope that through this project I’ll be able to positively change people’s view on this often misinterpreted entertainment.
In this book, through drawings and text, i show the main points of American wrestling history, the basics of wrestling slang, some examples of performers through the years and a bit about how wrestling has successfully adapted globally.
My main school-instructors were Birna Geirfinnsdóttir, Lóa Auðunsdóttir and Daníel Karl Björnsson with some minor advice from Þorvaldur Óttar Guðlaugsson and Snæfríð Jóhanna Þorsteins. Bryndís Björgvinsdóttir was of great help when it came to text-making.
Here below are some of the openings in the book. I'm planning on publishing the whole book here on my website in do time but this'll do until then.
Everything is in icelandic but maybe one day i'll translate it into english or even swedish.
Here below are some photographs from the graduation show itself where my project was on display. My display consisted of three copies of my book and three standess, of which one was glued to a wall whilst the other two stood on the floor. The standees were of three of my drawings in the book.
